Athletics Overview
Appalachian State competes in NCAA Division I, the highest level of college athletics with full scholarships and intense competition. The Mountaineers field 14 varsity sports teams with 430 total athletes, meaning about 2.2% of the 19,304 students compete at the varsity level. The athletic program distributes over $7 million in scholarships annually. App State plays in the Sun Belt Conference and maintains a heated rivalry with Western Carolina University.
