Athletics Overview
ASU competes in NCAA Division I, the highest level of college athletics with full scholarships and major television coverage. The Sun Devils field 22 varsity sports with 684 athletes, representing just 1.1% of the massive 64,398-student enrollment. ASU recently joined the Big 12 Conference, moving from the Pac-12 in a major realignment. The athletic department distributes over $16.9 million in scholarships across all sports. Football dominates the campus culture, with games at Sun Devil Stadium drawing huge crowds in the desert heat. The basketball program has produced NBA talent and March Madness appearances. ASU's biggest rival remains the University of Arizona Wildcats, creating one of college sports' most heated in-state rivalries. The "Territorial Cup" football game against Arizona represents the oldest rivalry trophy in college football.
