Athletics Overview
Carleton competes in NCAA Division III, where athletics focus on personal development rather than scholarships or big crowds. With 366 total athletes across 15 varsity sports, about 18% of the student body participates in intercollegiate athletics. The Knights play in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference alongside other small liberal arts colleges. Their biggest rivalry comes against cross-town neighbor St. Olaf College, located just a few miles away in the same town of Northfield. Division III means no athletic scholarships are awarded, keeping the emphasis on academics first. The trimester system actually works well for winter sports, allowing athletes to train during the unique January term. Most games draw modest crowds of fellow students and faculty rather than the massive audiences you'd see at Division I schools.
