Athletics Overview
FAMU competes in NCAA Division I, meaning big-time college athletics with full scholarships and serious competition. The university awards $4.4 million in athletic scholarships across 14 varsity sports. Just 4.2% of the 7,516 students are varsity athletes, creating an intimate but passionate sports culture. The Rattlers compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference alongside other historically black universities. FAMU's biggest rivalry burns with Bethune-Cookman University in the annual Florida Classic, one of college football's most celebrated HBCU matchups. The football program has deep roots in black college sports tradition. Women make up 66% of the student body, and many of the athletic programs reflect this gender balance. The relatively small athletic program means student-athletes get significant attention while maintaining the school's academic focus on pharmacy, nursing, and journalism.
