Athletics Overview
Gustavus competes in NCAA Division III, where sports focus on personal development rather than big-time athletics with no athletic scholarships available. With 681 total athletes out of 1,930 students, about 35% of the campus participates in varsity sports. The Golden Gusties field 19 varsity teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Their biggest rivalry burns with nearby St. Olaf College in what locals call the Battle for the Tomahawk. The school has built a particularly strong tradition in hockey and tennis over the decades. Division III means games draw modest but enthusiastic crowds of classmates and families rather than packed stadiums. Student-athletes here balance academics with competition, often continuing careers they started in high school without the pressure of athletic scholarships or professional aspirations.
