Athletics Overview

Hawaii Pacific competes in NCAA Division II, which offers athletic scholarships and competitive play without the intense pressure of major college sports. The university fields 15 varsity teams with 150 total athletes, meaning just 6% of the 2,502 students participate in varsity sports. HPU awards $1.77 million in athletic scholarships annually across its programs. The Sharks compete in the Pacific West Conference alongside other western regional universities. Swimming and water polo have traditionally been strong programs, taking advantage of Hawaii's year-round training climate and ocean access. The small athletic program reflects the university's focus on academics and its diverse international student body, with many students drawn more to Hawaii's outdoor recreation opportunities than traditional college sports culture.
