Athletics Overview
Long Beach City College fields 18 varsity sports with 380 student-athletes, representing just 1.7% of the massive 21,899-student body. The Vikings compete as an independent program rather than in a traditional conference, which is common for California community colleges. Community college athletics focus on development and transfer opportunities rather than major scholarships or large crowds. The program receives no athletic scholarship funding, keeping costs low while providing competitive experience. Many LBCC athletes use their two years to develop skills before transferring to four-year universities with athletic programs. The relatively small athletic participation rate reflects the school's primary mission as an academic transfer institution. With such a large and diverse student population, the Vikings draw from a deep talent pool across Long Beach's communities.
