Athletics Overview
Montana Tech competes in NAIA athletics, which represents mid-level college sports with athletic scholarships but smaller crowds than Division I programs. With 285 athletes out of 1,428 total students, nearly 20% of the student body participates in varsity sports. The Orediggers field teams in 8 sports and distribute $1.2 million in athletic scholarships annually. The school's athletic programs reflect the hardworking, blue-collar character of Butte's mining heritage. Montana Tech competes in the Frontier Conference alongside other small Rocky Mountain schools. While not known for powerhouse athletic programs, the Orediggers maintain competitive teams that serve the close-knit campus community. The relatively high percentage of student-athletes creates strong school spirit despite the remote location and small enrollment.
