Athletics Overview
The Bison compete in NCAA Division I, meaning big-time college athletics with full scholarships and serious recruitment. With 430 varsity athletes across 12 sports, about 4.5% of NDSU's 9,567 students compete at the highest collegiate level. The athletic department awards over $5.1 million in scholarships annually. NDSU has built a football powerhouse in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, winning multiple FCS national championships in recent years. The program has become famous for developing NFL quarterbacks, including Carson Wentz and Trey Lance. Basketball and wrestling also draw strong regional followings. The rivalry with University of North Dakota remains intense despite UND moving to a different conference. Fargo fans pack the Fargodome for football games, creating one of the most electric atmospheres in FCS football.
