Athletics Overview
Old Dominion competes in NCAA Division I, the highest level of college athletics where sports scholarships fuel competitive programs and passionate fan bases. The Monarchs field 18 varsity teams with 476 student-athletes, representing just 2.7% of the 17,521-person student body. ODU awards over $11 million in athletic scholarships annually. The university joined the Sun Belt Conference and maintains a rivalry with James Madison University. ODU built its athletic reputation on basketball success, particularly the women's program that dominated in the 1980s under coach Wendy Larry. The men's basketball team has made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. Football returned to campus in 2009 after a 68-year absence, playing at Kornblau Field. The athletic programs benefit from strong community support in the Hampton Roads region.
