Athletics Overview
The Huskies compete in NCAA Division II, which offers athletic scholarships but with smaller crowds and less fanfare than Division I programs. Saint Cloud State awards $2.9 million in athletic scholarships across 14 varsity sports. Just 7.3% of students are varsity athletes (377 out of 5,181 total enrollment). The university competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference alongside other regional schools. The hockey program has historically been the crown jewel, though the Huskies now compete at the Division II level after previously playing Division I hockey. The athletic department serves as a bridge between academics and community engagement in central Minnesota. Students can enjoy competitive sports without the intense pressure of major college athletics. Most games provide an intimate atmosphere where fans actually know the players' names.
