Athletics Overview
San Diego Mesa College competes as an independent institution in the California Community College Athletic Association, offering 19 varsity sports programs. With 407 total athletes out of 15,899 students, only 2.6% of the student body participates in varsity athletics. The college provides no athletic scholarships, focusing instead on developing student-athletes for potential transfer to four-year universities. Mesa College has built a solid reputation in community college athletics, particularly in basketball and baseball programs that have produced numerous transfers to Division I schools. The Olympians compete primarily against other San Diego-area community colleges including Grossmont, Miramar, and Southwestern. As a community college program, athletics serve as both a stepping stone for students planning to transfer and a source of school pride for the diverse student population.
