Athletics Overview
Shenandoah competes in NCAA Division III, which means students play sports for personal growth and school pride rather than athletic scholarships. With 599 athletes out of 2,127 total students, about 28% of the campus participates in varsity athletics. The Hornets field teams in 18 different sports and compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference alongside schools like Randolph-Macon and Hampden-Sydney. Division III creates a different atmosphere than big-time college sports, you won't find packed stadiums or ESPN coverage, but you will find student-athletes who genuinely balance academics with competition. The high participation rate shows how important athletics are to campus culture here. Many students appreciate being able to continue playing their high school sport without the intense time commitment of Division I programs.
