Athletics Overview
The Steers compete in NAIA athletics, which sits between Division I powerhouses and Division III recreational programs. About 33% of Texas College's 644 students participate in varsity athletics across 8 sports. The athletic department awards $1.53 million in scholarships to its 214 student-athletes. As a historically black college, Texas College maintains the proud HBCU tradition of combining academics with competitive athletics. The men's basketball program has historically been the school's strongest sport, drawing passionate crowds from the Tyler community. Football also generates excitement on campus during fall weekends. The high percentage of student-athletes creates a campus culture where sports play a central role in student life and school spirit.
