Athletics Overview
The Mocs compete in NCAA Division I, meaning big-time college athletics with full scholarships and serious competition. Just 2.4% of the 9,878 students are varsity athletes across 14 sports programs. The university awards $5.4 million in athletic scholarships annually to its 239 student-athletes. UTC competes in the Southern Conference alongside schools like Furman and Western Carolina. The basketball program has historically been the strongest, making several NCAA tournament appearances and producing NBA coach Tim Floyd as an alumnus. The football program was discontinued in 2013 but wrestling and soccer have gained regional recognition. While not a sports powerhouse, UTC maintains a respectable Division I presence that adds energy to campus life and provides significant scholarship opportunities for talented athletes.
