Athletics Overview
The University of the South competes in NCAA Division III, where athletics focus on personal development rather than scholarships or packed stadiums. With 535 athletes across 22 varsity sports, roughly one-third of the 1,598 students participate in intercollegiate athletics. The Tigers compete in the Southern Athletic Association alongside other small liberal arts colleges. Sewanee's 13,000-acre "Domain" provides strong facilities for outdoor sports and recreation. The football program has deep historical roots dating back to the 1890s, when Sewanee famously went undefeated and was declared national champion. Cross country and track benefit from the mountainous terrain of the Cumberland Plateau. The athletic program reflects the school's broader philosophy of developing well-rounded individuals rather than recruiting star athletes.
