Athletics Overview
Union College competes in the NAIA, which sits between Division I's scholarship-heavy programs and Division III's purely recreational approach. With 485 athletes across 21 varsity sports and just 736 total students, an impressive 66% of the student body participates in athletics. The school distributes over $9.3 million in athletic scholarships, making sports a major pathway to affordability for students. The Owls compete in multiple NAIA conferences depending on the sport. This level of athletic participation is unusually high even for small colleges, reflecting Union's commitment to using sports as both a recruiting tool and student engagement strategy. The athletic programs help fill residence halls and create campus community in this remote southeastern Kentucky town.
