University of Dubuque Athletics

Over 42% of University of Dubuque students compete in varsity athletics, making the Spartans one of the most athletically engaged campuses in the country. The school competes in NCAA Division III, where sports focus on personal development rather than revenue generation and no athletic scholarships are awarded. UD fields 23 varsity teams in the American Rivers Conference, which includes regional rivals like Loras College and Central College. The football program has historically been the school's strongest, with several conference championships and playoff appearances in recent decades. Wrestling also brings recognition to the small Presbyterian university. With 621 total athletes on a campus of just 1,473 students, game day creates genuine community excitement even without the massive crowds of Division I schools.
