Athletics Overview

The Hawks compete in NCAA Division I, the highest level of college athletics with full scholarships and intense competition. With 190 total athletes out of 2,165 students, about 9% of the campus participates in varsity sports. The university offers 10 varsity programs and distributes $2.6 million in athletic scholarships annually. As a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, UMES faces traditional HBCU rivals like Howard, Delaware State, and Norfolk State. The school has built a reputation in track and field, with several athletes advancing to national championships over the years. The relatively small enrollment creates an intimate atmosphere where student-athletes often become campus celebrities. Game days bring the tight-knit Princess Anne community together, though the rural setting means most rivalry matchups require significant travel to conference opponents.
