Athletics Overview

The Tigers compete in NCAA Division I, where athletic scholarships and serious competition define campus sports culture. With 475 athletes across 16 varsity sports, student-athletes make up 3.5% of the enrollment. The basketball program drives much of the athletic identity here, having produced NBA stars like Derrick Rose and Penny Hardaway, who now coaches the team. The school awards nearly $9 million in athletic scholarships annually. Memphis competes in the American Athletic Conference alongside schools like Cincinnati and Houston. The rivalry with Louisville adds extra intensity to basketball matchups. FedExForum, home to the Tigers and NBA Grizzlies, gives the basketball program a major-league atmosphere that few college teams enjoy.
