Athletics Overview
The Golden Gophers compete in NCAA Division I, college sports' highest level where athletic talent draws major crowds and ESPN coverage. With 615 athletes across 19 varsity sports, about 2% of the 30,469 students participate in varsity athletics. The university awards $17.7 million in athletic scholarships annually to recruit top talent. Minnesota competes in the strong Big Ten Conference alongside traditional rivals Wisconsin and Iowa. The school maintains heated rivalries with Wisconsin for the axe in football and Iowa in wrestling. Hockey is the crown jewel program, with both men's and women's teams capturing multiple national championships. TCF Bank Stadium hosts Big Ten football while Mariucci Arena creates one of college hockey's most intimidating atmospheres. Williams Arena, known as "The Barn," provides a classic basketball venue.
