Athletics Overview
The Wildcats compete in NCAA Division I, where athletic scholarships and serious competition define the sports culture. With 490 athletes across 16 varsity sports, about 4% of UNH's 11,230 students participate in varsity athletics. The university invests heavily in its programs with over $11 million in athletic scholarships annually. UNH competes in the Colonial Athletic Association for most sports and Hockey East for ice hockey. The Wildcats have built a particularly strong reputation in hockey, regularly contending for conference titles and NCAA tournament berths. Their rivalry with the University of Maine creates intense matchups, especially on the ice. While not a powerhouse in major sports like football or basketball, UNH maintains competitive programs that generate solid campus interest and regional recognition.
