University of New Mexico-Main Campus Athletics

The Lobos compete in NCAA Division I, meaning big-time college sports with athletic scholarships and serious competition. The basketball program has deep roots in Albuquerque, playing in the iconic arena known as "The Pit" where the crowd noise and elevation create a fierce home-court advantage. The Lobos compete in the Mountain West Conference alongside schools like Colorado State and San Diego State. Their biggest rival is New Mexico State, creating the annual "Rio Grande Rivalry" that divides the state. Football and basketball generate the most fan excitement, though the thin air at 5,312 feet elevation gives UNM a unique edge over visiting teams.
