Athletics Overview
Penn competes in NCAA Division I, where athletics feature high-level competition, substantial budgets, and significant campus visibility. With 935 varsity athletes across 28 sports, about 8.7% of the student body participates in intercollegiate athletics. The Quakers play in the Ivy League conference, which prohibits athletic scholarships but maintains fierce academic and athletic rivalries with schools like Princeton and Harvard. Penn's basketball team has made multiple NCAA tournament appearances, while the rowing program consistently ranks among the nation's best. The school's lacrosse and soccer programs also compete at top levels. Franklin Field, one of college football's oldest stadiums, hosts the annual Penn Relays, America's largest track and field event. Despite no athletic scholarships, Penn attracts top student-athletes who balance rigorous academics with competitive sports.
