Athletics Overview

The Búhos (Owls) compete in NAIA athletics, which sits between major college sports and intramural recreation. With 115 athletes across 14 varsity sports, roughly 4.5% of the 2,555 students participate in athletics. The school offers no athletic scholarships, keeping sports focused on student participation rather than big-money recruiting. As part of the University of Puerto Rico system, UPR-Humacao maintains athletic rivalries with other UPR campuses across the island. The NAIA level means games draw modest crowds of students and locals rather than packed stadiums. Puerto Rican universities traditionally emphasize volleyball and basketball, sports that match the island's climate and facilities. The suburban Humacao campus provides adequate space for athletic facilities while maintaining the academic focus that defines the UPR system's reputation in science and technology education.
