Athletics Overview

The Tommies compete in NCAA Division I, meaning serious athletic competition with scholarship opportunities and higher stakes than smaller divisions. With 540 total athletes across 17 varsity sports, roughly 9% of the 6,014 students participate in varsity athletics. The university awards $6.7 million in athletic scholarships annually. St. Thomas made headlines by moving from Division III to Division I in 2021, joining the Summit League after dominating at the lower level for decades. The football program has been particularly successful historically, winning multiple national championships at the Division III level. Basketball games at Schoenecker Arena draw solid crowds from the Saint Paul community. Traditional rivalries with Saint John's University and Macalester College add local intensity, though the Saint John's rivalry has been most prominent in football over the years.
