Athletics Overview

UWA competes in NCAA Division II, which means competitive sports with athletic scholarships but smaller crowds than major college programs. The Tigers field 14 varsity teams and award $2.7 million in athletic scholarships annually. About 13% of students are varsity athletes, creating a tight-knit athletic community on the small campus. The school competes in the Gulf South Conference against regional rivals like Delta State and Valdosta State. UWA has historically been strong in football and basketball, sports that generate the most campus excitement in rural Alabama. The athletic programs help bind together a student body that's 85% from in-state. With only 920 students living on campus, Tiger games become major social events that unite the entire university community.
