Virginia Union University Athletics

Virginia Union competes in NCAA Division II, which offers athletic scholarships and competitive play without the intense pressure of Division I. The Panthers field 14 varsity sports with 274 total athletes, meaning about 24% of the 1,153 students participate in athletics. The university allocates $1.6 million in athletic scholarships across its programs. As a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), one of the oldest historically black athletic conferences, VUU maintains fierce rivalries with other HBCUs like Virginia State and Norfolk State. The Panthers have a particularly strong tradition in football and basketball. The CIAA tournament, especially in basketball, draws passionate alumni and creates significant school spirit throughout Richmond's HBCU community.
