Athletics Overview
The Bulldogs compete in the NAIA, which offers a middle ground between major college sports and pure recreational athletics with some scholarship opportunities. Just 13.6% of Wilberforce's 602 students participate in varsity athletics across five sports programs. The athletic department awards no scholarships despite competing at the NAIA level. This historically black university has traditionally emphasized academics over athletics since its founding in 1856. The small rural campus and limited enrollment naturally restrict the scope of athletic programs. Wilberforce competes in a conference with other small HBCUs but lacks the sports tradition of larger historically black institutions. The 12:1 student-faculty ratio suggests the university prioritizes classroom learning over athletic achievement for its predominantly African American student body.
