Athletics Overview
Yale competes in NCAA Division I, the highest level of college athletics with major sports culture and national television coverage. With 952 athletes across 31 varsity sports, about 14% of the 6,811-student body participates in varsity athletics. The Bulldogs compete in the strong Ivy League conference, where academic excellence meets competitive athletics. Yale offers no athletic scholarships, as Ivy League schools rely on need-based financial aid instead. The football rivalry with Harvard dates back to 1875 and remains one of college sports' oldest traditions. Yale has produced Olympic champions and professional athletes across multiple sports. The crew team has particular historical significance, having helped establish rowing as a major American collegiate sport. Basketball and hockey also draw strong campus support during their seasons.
