Is Hartwick College Worth It?

Hartwick College gives you a mixed-to-weak financial return. You pay about $29,800 a year and leave with median earnings just over $61,000 a decade out, but that number hides a wide gap between what different majors deliver. The bigger problem is that fewer than half of students graduate, and only about 71% return after their first year. If you don't finish, you carry the debt without the degree that pays it back.

Nursing is the clear winner here. At about $60,410 a year, it earns nearly double what the next-best program pays, and it feeds directly into a healthcare job market that hires regionally around Oneonta and beyond. If nursing is your plan, Hartwick's numbers make sense.

Almost everything else looks shaky. Business Administration graduates earn around $32,000 while carrying $23,250 in debt. Sociology, Biology, and Psychology graduates land near $29,000 to $30,000 and often leave with the full $27,000 median debt load. Those salaries barely clear entry-level pay, and they don't move the needle against that debt for years.

The net price tiers hold a warning. If your family earns under $30,000, you pay about $26,633 , the lowest tier, but still steep for that income. Families earning $48,000 to $75,000 actually pay the most at $30,440, more than families earning over $110,000. There's no meaningful discount as income drops, so a lower-income family shoulders nearly the same bill as a wealthy one.

Hartwick fits you if you're set on nursing and willing to finish. If you're headed into sociology, psychology, biology, or general business, the math is hard to justify at this price, and you should compare it against a cheaper public option before committing.
