Is Mitchell Community College Worth It?

Mitchell Community College keeps costs low, but the payoff depends almost entirely on which program you pick. At under $6,000 a year, this is a cheap credential to earn, so the financial risk is smaller here than at most schools. The problem is that the median earnings a decade out sit near $33,000, which tells you the typical graduate doesn't land far above entry-level work.

Nursing is the clear winner. The associate nursing program pays out nearly double the earnings of business administration and more than double liberal arts and criminal justice. If you can get into and finish nursing, the math here works strongly in your favor given the low price. Statesville and the surrounding Iredell County health systems keep demand for nurses steady.

The other programs are a harder sell. Business administration, liberal arts, and criminal justice all leave you earning barely above what a high school graduate might make, and cosmetology's certificate earnings are low enough that the credential mostly makes sense only as a licensing step, not a standalone return.

The biggest risk is the graduation rate. Only about one in six students finishes, so the real danger is paying tuition, taking on some debt, and leaving without a credential at all. Low sticker price doesn't protect you if you don't finish.

The net price barely moves across income levels, running roughly $5,100 to $7,600 whether your family earns under $30k or up to $110k. Lower-income families get a modest break, but nobody here gets a dramatically discounted ride.

This school fits you if you're targeting nursing or using it as a low-cost transfer step toward a four-year degree. If you enroll in one of the lower-earning programs and aren't sure you'll finish, look harder before committing.
