Admission Guide

Virginia Military Institute requires all applicants to complete the Common Application by January 15 for fall admission. You must submit official high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, and one letter of recommendation. VMI also requires a medical examination and physical fitness assessment after acceptance.

The application asks about your interest in military service, but you are not required to pursue a military career after graduation. About half of graduates enter civilian careers immediately upon graduation.

All cadets live on campus in barracks-style housing for four years. Your first year involves intensive military training called the "Rat Line," a challenging orientation system that continues through most of your freshman year. You will wear uniforms daily and follow military protocols including formations, inspections, and strict schedules.

Engineering programs attract the strongest applicants due to VMI's reputation in these fields. Civil and mechanical engineering have particularly rigorous math and science prerequisites, so strong performance in calculus and physics helps your preparation.

VMI operates on a unique calendar with classes ending before Thanksgiving and final exams in December. Spring semester begins in January with a three-week intensive term where you take one concentrated course.

Financial aid applications require the FAFSA by March 1. Virginia residents receive significant tuition benefits as VMI is a state institution. All accepted students automatically receive consideration for merit scholarships based on their application materials.

The Honor Code governs all aspects of cadet life. Violations result in dismissal from the institute. You should understand this commitment before enrolling, as VMI takes honor violations more seriously than typical colleges.
